The Village School case study photo: Bacchus and Ariadne

What is the context of the work?

  • The National Gallery and also back in school
  • Key Stage 2- PMLD children
  • 7
  • This was a year long project which formed the class's curriculum for the year and led to a DISCOVER Arts Award for each pupil.
  • Led by the National Gallery, music teacher, art teacher, drama teacher and class teacher.

What is the content of the work?

Children visited the National Gallery and looked at Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne. The gallery room was closed to the public so we could have a sensory story around the painting. Follow-up work in school involved further exploration of themes in the painting using music, drama, art and storytelling.

What are the key features of the teaching and learning approach?

Combined arts and a multi-sensory and themed approach to learning.

How is the work being reviewed?

With the success of every child achieving an Arts Award. There was also a celebration shared with parents and gallery staff at the end of the project.

Reflection

  • The experience of visiting a beautiful building and exploring major original art works for the first time was amazing for these children. This also inspired teachers to run an exciting project back in school.
  • Teamwork and the multi-sensory cross-arts approach made it possible to cover quite complex themes in an accessible way.
  • Support from the gallery with resources and a soundscape to use at school were very helpful.
